Developed around 1973 by Richard Bandler, a student and John Grinder, a professor of linguistics, in association with the social scientist Gregory Bateson, NLP is a pragmatic school of thought which provides tools to understand the mental and cognitive processes behind human behaviour.

NLP is based on the idea that mind, body and language interact to create an individual's perception of the world and that perceptions, and hence behaviours, can be changed by the application of a variety of techniques.

NLP is hugely popular and -despite the controversy it attracts- it has been successfully used to treat problems raging from phobias to addictions and lack of self-esteem, to life-enhancement and success achievement.

Self-Hypnosis

The greatest misconception about hypnosis is that some people still think of it as some form of magic, or a supernatural power. Of course, some theatrical hypnotism shows are quite misleading, and may encourage watchers to believe just that. Today, hypnosis is out of the realm of wizards and magicians and into the modern science of self-help and self-development.

The greatest hypnotherapists all confirm that there is no such thing as hypnotism, only self-hypnosis exists. They all attest to the fact that no one can be hypnotised against their will, and without their full consent and participation in the process. Therefore, the process is always referred to as self-hypnosis.

As a matter of fact, hypnotic trances are an intrinsic part of our every day life.

What do you think happens when you're watching an interesting TV show? You're in a hypnotic trance. When you stare at your computer screen for long hours? You're in a hypnotic trance... You're in a trance when you've been driving down the motorway for an extended period of time, when you hear a great speaker, listen to powerful sounds, read a gripping book, admire beautiful art, or when you fall in love.

Hypnosis is nothing more than narrowing your focus down to a very fine point, while letting go of everything else. It's this tightened state of focus, which induces a state of deep relaxation, thus allowing easier access to the subconscious mind.

The conscious mind is the one we assume we think with. It represents a small part of the entire mind, and perhaps the least significant part. The subconscious mind, on the other hand, is the one that's in control most of the time. This fact is manifest in almost all of our daily actions. Most of the time, our behaviour is a subconscious thought in action.

One of the key roles of the subconscious mind is to keep subconscious processes sub conscious, or beneath consciousness, hidden from the conscious mind. It houses early -and often painful- childhood experiences. Deep-rooted, unresolved memories and emotions we once buried there, but which continue to negatively affect our behaviour and our life. The subconscious mind hides these from our conscious mind to protect us.

The only way we can change the things that our conscious mind doesn't like, is to communicate directly with the subconscious mind and change it. We need to bring it into alignment with what we consciously want. This is exactly what self-hypnosis does.

Whether it is weight control, quitting bad habits, eliminating self-sabotage, self-esteem issues and mental efficiency problems involving memory and learning, we can exert influence on all of these, and gradually correct them, by influencing the subconscious mind. Self-hypnosis is an incredibly powerful tool for accomplishing that. It's a skill that can be learned and practiced to effectively deal with, and resolve a wide range of long-standing issues that negatively affect our life.
